What Is Wear and Tear?Updated 2 months ago

At Black Finch, every piece is thoughtfully handcrafted to be worn and loved for years to come. However, like all fine jewellery, our pieces are not immune to the natural effects of daily wear. Understanding what qualifies as wear and tear helps ensure your expectations are aligned with the nature of precious materials.

Wear and tear refers to the gradual changes or damage that occurs through regular use. These signs of aging are perfectly normal and not considered manufacturing faults, meaning they are not covered under warranty.

  • Common examples include:
  • Stones chipped or cracked from accidental impact or pressure
  • Claws pulled back after catching on clothing, towels or other materials
  • Rings misshapen through activities like lifting, manual tasks or gym use
  • Claw wear over time, often requiring re-tipping or tightening
  • Surface scratches or small dents caused by contact with hard surfaces
  • Loose or lost gemstones due to knocks, pressure or inadequate care

While diamonds and sapphires are durable, they are not unbreakable. Similarly, precious metals like gold and platinum, while strong, are also soft compared to many everyday objects and can bend, warp or scratch if handled roughly.

To minimise wear we recommend removing your jewellery before exercising, gardening, sleeping, or any activity that may apply unnecessary pressure or expose your piece to impact.
